花園法皇御宸翰

Emperor’s holograph letter

The doctrines of our religious denomination are based on the teachings of Shakyamuni; “The treasury of the True Dharma Eye, the ineffable mind of nirvana, the true form of the formless, the subtle Dharma gate. (正法眼蔵涅槃妙心実相無相微妙の法門)”. It was transmitted through Rinzai Gigen(Linji Yixuan;臨済義玄) to Muso Daishi(無相大師) who was the founder of Myōshinji Temple. We enlighten people and contribute to world peace and culture declaring this True Dharma in accordance with the sacred faith of the abdicated emperor Hanazono (the Institution of Myoshinji School, Chapter1-Article2).

The religious order consists of professional monks and laymen supporters-adherents. The both live in spiritual peace following the founders last will and precept “Kou Sono Moto wo Tsutomeyo(請務其本)- I request you to research into the very fundamental”, keeping in mind the sacred faith “Ho’on Shatoku(報恩謝徳)- Repayment for indebtedness.” (ibid.)

The teachings of Myoshinji Temple are practicing the Sermon of Muso Daishi; ”Kou Sono Moto wo Tsutomeyo. (請務其本)” and the wish of the abdicated emperor Hanazono; “Ho’on Shatoku (報恩謝徳)” and “Koryu Buppo (興隆仏法)- Propagation of Buddhism” in our daily life. Myoshinji Temple, “The temple of the Wondrous Mind, was established in 1337 by the abdicated emperor Hanazono (1308-1318). The social conditions at that time are similar to those of today in terms of isolated human relationship. The abdicated emperor Hanazono, who was ill in bed, decided to convert his Hanazono Imperial Villa into Myoshinji Temple to extend a helpful hand to the suffering people, and sent a letter dated july 22, 1347 to Muso Daishi soliciting him to be founder of this Myoshinji Temple. This letter is called “Goshinkan (御宸翰- Emperor’s holograph letter).” In the Goshinkan, the writer mentions his prayer that the mind of “Repayment for indebtedness” may be put to use in this country in order that the unrest of public feeling may be saved and the people’s daily life be peaceful, and this mind has been transmitted down to the present time. It is the faith of Myoshinji Temple denomination, Rinzai School , that we always reflect this mind to the society. And it is the belief that we put this mind to practical use in our family life. The mind of “Ho’on Shatoku (報恩謝徳)” is the very mind of “Okagesama-repayment for indebtedness.” This mind is indispensable in our life. Our life receives the blessings of the surroundings- foods, energy, environments, and so on. A society, in which we can say mildly the words “Okagesama” and “Arigato (Thank you),” becomes for us much better “Hanazono (flower garden, the Lotus Land of Purity)” for us.
